A Wood Rabbit, to be exact. (On the cusp of the Fire Dragon, since I was born in Jan 1976.) Some folks say that when it’s “your” lunar year, it’s a time to take extra care of yourself, to hunker down and stay under the radar. We rabbits are pretty good at that sort of thing. (When we’re not, you know, decorating the moon.)
This time last year, I fell into a horrible depression (and landed in K-Drama World, which is sort of like Oz, but more like Korean HallmarkLand). All the projects I had lined up got left behind. (Except “Ghost Lake Mermaid”—like a miracle—I’m still not sure how I managed to eke that story out and I am SO GLAD I DID omg.)
I booked a cabin at the Highlights Campus for the first week in November and used that—and NaNoWriMo—to propel me to the end of my manuscript for SHE’S WITH THE BAND (Contemporary YA RomCom about Vermont and the Indie Rock music industry in 2020). And it worked! I finished! In January I wrote my story for the upcoming Artifice & Craft anthology…and I finished that, too! And then Casey & Jason came back with their edits for SWTB…so I edited that and sent it off to my agent. HAHA!
I’m back on track! (A year late, but who’s counting? STOP COUNTING) I’m taking a week or so to get through my to-do list and set up some social media stuff, and then I’m going to draft the 2 sequels of OODLES OF DOODLES I have notes for. And get THOSE to my agent. And then…on to the next novel revision! I can do this, right??
I CAN TOTALLY DO THIS! And then next year, I get to decorate the moon. (but I still reserve the right to watch more K-Dramas…)

Castle of Horror Anthology Volume 9: Young Adult - The Castle of Horror Anthology returns with stories of the young-- horrible, thrilling, terrible flamin' youth at its most harrowing. Featuring my award-winning story “Blood from Stone” (which Jason apparently had no idea was a retelling of “Bluebeard” mixed with the bloody history of Sir Gilles de Rais…)
On The Edge of All This - A Changeling: The Lost tie-in novelette. Once upon a time in the autumn of 2020, I wrote a fairy tale about true love and a storm chaser. I titled it “On the Edge of All This,” after the song I have words in on The Fireside Sessions. (Remember when we made that album with Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol?) My season is Autumn (of course) and you don’t have to know the world of Changeling: the Lost to understand the story – you just have to know that all worlds are on the edge of Faerie. My story is a mash-up of “Beauty & the Beast” and “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.”
The Hitherto Secret Experiments of Marie Curie (April 11) - When asked if I was interested in writing “an alternate history about a young Marie Curie getting mixed up in dark fantasy shenanigans”, of course I said YES. (Dead Women in STEM FTW!) “Marya’s Monster” is about a young Marie Curie who befriends the monster under her bed while coming to terms with the death of her mother. And in true Alethea Kontis fashion: the more you know about Marie Curie, the more you will appreciate the many, many amazing and magical and TRUE threads woven into this heart-wrenching tale.
